For Jean-Sebastien, getting involved with the union began with seeing a need and stepping up to fill it.
In this month’s UNDE Member Spotlight, Jean-Sebastien reflects on his journey in the union, the importance of standing up for members, the cases that have meant the most to him, and why having a strong team by your side makes all the difference.
Q: How did you first get involved with the union?
I started out as a CSST representative, setting up the local committee for my unit as there wasn’t one. That was my first introduction to the trade union movement and the various regulations.
Q: Why has your involvement in the union been so important to you?
Over time, in my work in the civil service, I realised that there are people who need support from their peers and who are less equipped to fight for their rights, so I think it’s important to help them.
Q: What achievement stands out most from your time at the UNDE, and why was it important?
I’d say the cases involving victims of harassment, where we can restore a healthy working environment for members, are the ones closest to my heart.
Q: What advice would you give to members considering getting involved?
Surround yourself with a good team – it makes all the difference. My team at Local 10527 is committed and goes the extra mile for everyone. It’s important to work together and support one another in this environment, which can sometimes be a bit challenging.
Q: What gives you the most satisfaction in your role?
When I can make a difference to people’s work, both in their relationships with their supervisors and in the quality of their working environment.
